Welcome to Junior Preschool

Our Junior Preschool program is designed to gently support children as they move closer to school readiness, while continuing to prioritise their emotional security, social growth, and physical wellbeing in a caring and supportive environment. Each day is filled with engaging, play-based experiences that encourage children to explore, ask questions, and build confidence in their learning.

Early Foundations for Learning

Language skills and literacy

Developed through shared stories, songs, conversations, and rich vocabulary experiences.

Early Mathematical Thinking

Encouraged through counting games, sorting activities, building tasks, and everyday problem-solving opportunities.

Fine Motor and Creative Skills

Children are also supported to develop the fine motor skills needed for early writing through creative and sensory experiences such as painting, drawing, cutting, tracing, and manipulating a variety of materials. These experiences help strengthen hand control, concentration, and coordination in a fun and engaging way.

Movement and Physical Wellbeing

Movement and active play are an important part of our program, with both indoor and outdoor environments providing opportunities for children to run, climb, jump, and balance - as well as take part in guided physical activities that build strength, coordination, and confidence.

Also, children enjoy weekly Ready Steady Go lessons that promote movement, coordination, confidence and active learning through fun and engaging activities.

Social & Emotional Growth

We also focus strongly on helping children develop positive social behaviours and emotional understanding. With gentle support from educators, children learn to work alongside others, share ideas and resources, manage feelings, and begin to navigate challenges with growing independence. These skills help lay a strong foundation for a confident and smooth transition into Senior Preschool and future learning.

Valuing Children’s Voices

Children’s voices are central to shaping practices and decision-making across the service. In the Junior Preschool Room, QCC Ambassadors actively contribute to discussions and support decisions and initiatives alongside the Director. Across all rooms, children are regularly encouraged to share their ideas, opinions, and feedback about the learning environment, daily routines, experiences, resources, onboarding processes, and other aspects of the service. Their perspectives are genuinely valued and play an important role in guiding continuous improvement and meaningful changes throughout the service.
